What is a good SNR signal to noise ratio?

Generally, a signal with an SNR value of 20 dB or more is recommended for data networks where as an SNR value of 25 dB or more is recommended for networks that use voice applications.

SNR is expressed in decibels. It is calculated by dividing the signal power by the noise power. A ratio bigger than 1 dB indicates that the signal is more than the noise. Conversely, if the ratio is less than 1, it indicates that the noise level is bigger than the signal level.

How do you fix SNR margin?

Luckily, there are some things you can do to improve the SNR margin:

  1. Replace your router with a better one.
  2. Install a good quality ADSL / VDSL filter to your router.
  3. Try to change Internet provider, as some providers are less crowded than others.
  4. Check cabling patching.
  5. Change the in-building cabling.
