What is a MAK 90 AK-47?

The MAK 90 or “Modified AK, 1990”, is a semi-automatic Type 56 assault rifle, chambered in 7.62×39, and produced by Norinco beginning in the year 1990. They are by official definition, sporting rifles. But, if you look at it, it sure looks an awful lot like an AK47. This is where things get interesting historically.

MAK-90 rifles manufactured either with AK-47 assault rifle receivers or threaded muzzles, which are equipped to accept silencers or grenade launchers, have been illegally imported into the United States from China.

Who makes Norinco ak47?

Design began in 1947 and production started in 1956 (ongoing today as well). NORINCO of China handled manufacture and Bangladesh Ordnance Factory in Bangladesh signed on to produce local license-production copies. To date, some 10 to 15 million examples are believed to have been produced.

What is the difference between milled and stamped AK 47?

The stamped receivers have an oval dimple, like below… The milled receivers have a machined rectangle, like below. The stamped receivers are also darker in color, while the milled receivers are lighter in color. Milled receivers are also heavier than the stamped, due to the type of metals used.

Why did Norinco get banned?

Norinco has been cloning and selling American designs on the international market for decades. In the United States, the company is banned because it tried to sell guns directly to gangs in the 1990s.

Is the MAK-90 the original AK-47?

It was the original AK-pattern rifle. The MAK-90 is a Chinese derivative, which is based off of the Type 56 rifle. The Type 56 is an almost exact copy of the Russian AK-47 and has the milled receiver in earlier models, with the stamped receiver in later models.

What is the difference between an AK-47 and an AK47?

What most people call an “AK-47” is actually just a “Kalashinikov”; “Ak-47” only refers to the very earliest variant built in the early 1950’s (I I believe I’ve read that it was never actually called the “Ak-47” by the Soviets). The Ak-47 had a thick machined-metal receiver, easily distinguishable by the rectangular slot above the magazine.

What is the difference between the AKM Type 56 and MAK-90?

The MAK-90 is the civilian semi-auto only version of the Type 56. Both the Type 56 & the MAK-90 are produced by Norinco. Other than the semi-auto only, another difference between the AKM and the MAK-90 is the MAK-90’s & (Type 56) stamped receivers are 1.5mm thick as opposed to the 1mm AKM.
