What is AIP system in submarine?

The air-independent propulsion (AIP) technology enhances the underwater endurance and stealth of conventional submarines who otherwise have to come on the surface to use oxygen to recharge their batteries. The 270 Kilowatt fuel cell-based AIP system will begin to be fitted on the Scorpene submarines.

How long can a submarine run on batteries?

Improvements in the design of conventional lead-acid batteries have somewhat increased endurance at low speed. Many modern submarines, for example, can remain submerged (at about three knots) for as long as a week to 10 days.

Why do Subs not run out of air?

Submarines don’t run out of air, they take seawater, distill it and then run that through a machine the zaps the water with electricity to separate oxygen and hydrogen atoms. They pump they explosive hydrogen gas out to sea and run the oxygen through a compressor and store in in huge tanks.

How does an AIP work?

Air-independent propulsion (AIP), or air-independent power, is any marine propulsion technology that allows a non-nuclear submarine to operate without access to atmospheric oxygen (by surfacing or using a snorkel). AIP can be retrofitted into existing submarine hulls by inserting an additional hull section.

How deep is the USS Thresher?

USS Thresher (SSN-593)
Struck: 10 April 1963
Motto: Vis Tacita (Silent Strength)
Fate: Sank with all hands during deep diving tests, 10 April 1963, 129 died.
Status: Located 350 km east of Cape Cod at a depth of 8400 ft.

What is air independent propulsion?

Air-independent propulsion (AIP), or air-independent power, is marine propulsion technology that allows a non-nuclear submarine to operate without access to atmospheric oxygen (by surfacing or using a snorkel). AIP can augment or replace the diesel-electric propulsion system of non-nuclear vessels.

What is AIP propulsion system?

AIP can augment or replace the diesel-electric propulsion system of non-nuclear vessels. The indigenous AIP propulsion system developed by DRDO is a modular system that can be easily configured for any conventional submarine platform.

What is DRDO’s air independent propulsion system (AIP)?

DRDO has announced that all Kalvari- Class Submarines will be fitted with India’s own Air Independent propulsion system. It will extend the endurance of conventional submarines by two weeks. DRDO’s AIP is a fuel cell-based AIP.

Why diesel engine Submarines need air independent propulsion system?

Air independent propulsion system offers a great advantage to the diesel engine submarine by increasing its endurance after that conventional submarine can prove lethal in targeting an enemy fleet.
