What is alpenglow effect?
‘Alps glow’, Italian: enrosadira) is an optical phenomenon that appears as a horizontal reddish glow near the horizon opposite to the Sun when the solar disk is just below the horizon. This effect is easily visible when mountains are illuminated, but can also be seen when clouds are lit through backscatter.
What causes alpenglow?
With an alpenglow, the sun is directly below the horizon line so there is no direct path for the light to reach the mountains. The beautiful colorful light of an alpenglow is caused by the reflection off airborne snow, water or ice particles that are low in the atmosphere.
