What is BCI cotton certification?

Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), a global not-for-profit, is the world’s largest cotton sustainability programme. BCI aims to transform cotton production worldwide, by addressing the negative impacts of cotton growing and processing. As a BCI member, Coats is part of a global community sharing in this commitment.

How can I become a member of BCI?

The law graduates have to enrol with their state’s bar council on payment of Rs 600 and Rs 150 to the BCI. The enrolment committee of BCI verifies the applications forms of the candidates and are given ‘Certificate of Enrolment’. BCI comprises of members chosen from the law fraternity in India.

BCI uses a mass balance system – a credit system where physical bales are not followed through the supply chain. Rather, the Cotton Tracer follows the volumes of Better Cotton lint (measured in BCCUs), as part of the orders placed between suppliers, from the merchant down the supply chain.

Partner retailers include H&M, Gap, IKEA, and Levi Strauss, and include funding partners from USAID. At the end of 2017, BCI had 1,197 members – 85 retailer and brand members, 1,039 supplier and manufacturer members, 32 producer organisation members, 31 civil society members and 12 associate members.

BCI receives funding from three sources: earned income for services delivered; grants and donations from private and public funders; and volume-based fees and funding from brands. BCI Retailer and Brand Members pay a fee based on the amount of Better Cotton they source.
