What is BWP and BWR?

BWP (Boiling Water Proof) and BWR ( Boiling Water Resistance) are the 2 major marine grade plywood. Since both are resistance to boiling water they are often used in kitchen cabinets, where the contact of water is high.

Is MDF or plywood heavier?

As it’s quite a bit denser than plywood, MDF weighs considerably more. This can be a major issue if you’ll need to lift, hold, or clamp panels in place or construct something that requires an overhead reach, such as elevated shelves.

Is MDF material waterproof?

It should be noted that whichever method you use, MDF is moisture-resistant, not water-resistant, nor waterproof, and is still prone to swelling and warping if in direct contact with the elements.

Medium density fiberboard, or MDF, and particle board are both pressed wood products often used for cabinets, shelving, furniture and paneling. Also a waste-wood product, particleboard is less expensive than MDF and made by hot-pressing sawdust (vs fiber) with resin adhesives.

Should I Choose particle board or MDF for my Kitchen cabinets?

The construction of the wood makes using screws difficult, and if you need to disassemble and reassemble your cabinet boxes, they might not survive! Both particle board and MDF can be affected by moisture which can cause expansion. They both hold veneers well, but MDF is the denser of the two.

Is MDF better than plywood for cabinets?

In the right application, MDF can actually be better than plywood or solid lumber. MDF has great strength, does not noticeably shrink or expand with temperature, and has a uniform surface without grain or knots. It is also less expensive than plywood. For these reasons it is commonly used by woodworkers in cabinetry and other projects.

Is particle board water resistant?

For example, a melamine particle board is water-resistant until the melamine coating is penetrated and water touches the wood chips. The same goes for plywood. However, plywood will last longer in comparison to particle board and MDF when exposed to water.
