What is considered a target school?
A target school is one where your academic credentials ( grades , SAT or ACT scores , and class rank) fall well within the school’s average range for the most recently accepted class. There are no guarantees, but it’s not unreasonable to expect to be accepted to several of your target schools.

What is a target and reach school?
A target school is a school where your grades and test scores fall right within the school’s indicated range. A reach school is a school where your grades and test scores fall towards the low end of the indicated range, but you’re still within range. The last bolded sentence is very important.
How many target schools should I have?
Three to four of the schools on your list should be “target” colleges—institutions at which your academic profile is close to the average admitted student and you realistically have a better than 50/50 chance at admission.
What is a non target school?
A non-target is a school where few firms (or not even one firm) recruits for back or middle office positions. Students coming from a non-target school have to put in considerable time and effort to earn a first round interview with a firm.
Can you get into a hard target school?
A “Target” school is a school that has a reasonable probability to admit you if you were to apply. Not too easy (those are “Safety” schools), but not too hard either. A “Reach” school is a school that would be really hard for you to get into.
Is 13 colleges too many to apply to?
While there’s no cap on the number of schools you can apply to, some students, especially those from affluent backgrounds who want to go to a selective college, can go overboard, applying to more than 20 or 30 colleges. Personally, I would strongly discourage any student from applying to more than 15 colleges.
