The difference between the two is this. When you are asking どこで Doko DE, you are asking “where at?” On the other hand, when you are asking どこに Doko NI, you are asking “where to?” You need to figure out if you want to ask “where at” or “where to” depending on the verb you have in the question.
Can you say rimokon wa Doko ni Imasu ka?
HOWEVER, if I was asking “where is the remote control”, I could NOT say RIMOKON WA DOKO NI IMASU KA. Because the RIMOKON is NOT a living or animate object I would have to say RIMOKON WA DOKO NI ARIMASU KA. I could also say RIMOKON WA DOKO DESU KA without any problems.
What is the difference between “arimasu” and “dokodesuka?
Take note: You cannot use “arimasu” for people, it is considered rude. although the 2 phrases are both questions,asking for the Location of an unknown ‘Object’,the main Difference,is the choice of Verbs: therefore, “Dokodesuka” means,”Where is ‘It'”,and does NOT specify that the ‘Object’ in question,is Human.
