What is instrumented indentation?

Instrumented indentation, also known as depth-sensing indentation or nanoindentation, is increasingly being used to probe the mechanical response of materials from metals and ceramics to polymeric and biological materials.

Is there any effect of the depth of the indentation in determining Brinell hardness?

It is defined as the resistance to indentation, and it is determined by measuring the permanent depth of the indentation. More simply put, when using a fixed force (load) and a given indenter, the smaller the indentation, the harder the material.

What does indentation hardness measure?

Indentation hardness measures how resistant a material is to changing when it is compressed. To measure indentation hardness, workers use equipment to compress the material. They then measure the level of indentation left behind on the material. Generally speaking, a smaller indentation indicates a harder material.

What is indentation test?

Indentation testing is one such test, as it produces a complex state of stress in the specimen. The indentation test, shown in the image below, is designed to characterize a material’s behavior under complex loading. The test is performed by pressing a stiff steel sphere into a softer test specimen.

How do you determine the hardness of an indentation in concrete?

The hardness can then be inferred from the width or area of the indentation or from its depth. The Brinell hardness test generally uses a steel ball 10 mm diameter which is pressed into the surface under a load of 30 kN. In the Vickers hardness test, a pyramid shaped indenter is pressed into the surface, usually under a load of 500 N.
