What is meant by BHN?

BHN = Brinell Hardness Number (kgf/mm2) P = applied load in kilogram-force (kgf) D = diameter of indenter (mm) Brinell hardness is sometimes quoted in megapascals; the Brinell hardness number is multiplied by the acceleration due to gravity, 9.80665 m/s2, to convert it to megapascals.

The Rockwell test measure the depth of the indentation, while the Brinell test measures the width of the indentation.

Why are cylindrical objects quenched vertically?

After steel is quenched, it is usually very hard and strong but brittle. The quenching velocity of oil is much less than water. To minimize distortion, long cylindrical objects should be quenched vertically, flat sections edgeways and thick sections should enter the bath first.
