What is PWR and BWR?

The main difference between a BWR and PWR is that in a BWR, the reactor core heats water, which turns to steam and then drives a steam turbine. In a PWR, the reactor core heats water, which does not boil. This hot water then exchanges heat with a lower pressure water system, which turns to steam and drives the turbine.

What is PWR power plant?

The PWR plant is the most common type of nuclear power reactor in the world. A PWR has two water systems. One is called the reactor(primary) system that retrieves heat generated in the reactor, and the other is called the turbine(secondary) system that produces electric power with steam generated by that heat.

How does a BWR work?

BWRs heat water and produce steam directly inside the reactor vessel. Water is pumped up through the reactor core and heated by fission. Pipes then feed the steam directly to a turbine to produce electricity. The unused steam is then condensed back to water and reused in the heating process.

Why thermal efficiency of BWR is much higher than PWR?

A boiler, super heater, and reheat are used with the BWR similar to a coal-fired facility, but operating at lower temperature and pressure. In principle, the PWR reactor can attain higher efficiencies than the BWR, but the extra water circulation loop limits the upper end of the efficiency at about 33\%.
