San Francisco Bay is a shallow estuary in the U.S. state of California. It is surrounded by a contiguous region known as the San Francisco Bay Area (often simply “the Bay Area”), and is dominated by the large cities of San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland.

Why is it called the Bay Area?

When we say “the bay area” what we mean are the nine counties around “San Francisco Bay.” It’s a bit confusing because the city and the bay have the same name. That is to say, that large body of water is the “San Francisco Bay”: The City (and county) of San Francisco is just the tip of that peninsula there.
