What is the complete connectome of the human brain?

A connectome* is the complete map of the neural connections in a brain. It is sometimes referred to as a “wiring diagram” of the molecular connections between neurons, trading on the analogy of a brain to an electronic device, where axons and dendrites are wires and neuron bodies are components.

What does the connectome do?

The connectome is the complete description of the structural connectivity (the physical wiring) of an organism’s nervous system. The field of science dealing with the assembly, mapping and analysis of data on neural connections is called connectomics.

What is a connectome and how does it affect neural activity?

A connectome is a comprehensive map of these links—a wiring diagram of the brain. These connections ensure that brain activity unfolds through time as a rhythmic symphony rather than a disordered cacophony.

How many neurons are thought to be in a human connectome?

86 billion neurons
Humans. The Human Connectome Project, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), was created with the goal of mapping the 86 billion neurons (and their connections) in a human brain.

What is functional brain connectome?

The “functional connectome” is a term used to describe the collective set of functional connections in the brain. Functional connectivity provides a measure of the correlations in activity over time between brain regions, and is the mainstay of current research into brain networks.

What is connectome research?

The Connectome Coordination Facility (CCF) houses and distributes public research data for a series of studies that focus on the connections within the human brain. These are known as Human Connectome Projects.

Why is the human connectome important?

Charting the human connectome in healthy children and adults will help researchers discover the role that brain circuitry plays during development and aging as well as inform our understanding of numerous brain disorders, cognitive decline, and mental illnesses.

What is the purpose of the Human Connectome project?

Launched in 2009 as a Blueprint Grand Challenge, the NIH Human Connectome Project (HCP) is an ambitious effort to map the neural pathways that underlie human brain function. The overarching purpose of the Project is to acquire and share data about the structural and functional connectivity of the human brain.

What is structural connectome?

The structural connectome is a key determinant of brain function and dysfunction. The connectome-based model approach aims to understand the functional organization of the brain by modeling the brain as a dynamical system, then studying how the functional architecture rises from the underlying structural skeleton.

What is the human connectome project and how will mapping of the human brain contribute to scientific knowledge?

The Human Connectome Project is mapping the connections between neural pathways that underlie brain function and behavior. The findings from HCP will help transform our understanding of the human mind and brain in health, and in disease.
