What is the difference between BLS and ACLS? Basic Life Support (BLS) is the generic term for any form of CPR and is required for all registered nurses. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is primarily required for RNs who work in a hospital setting and care for critically ill adults.

Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) is a group of procedures and techniques that treat immediately life-threatening conditions, including cardiac arrest, shock, stroke, and trauma. ACLS procedures and techniques are arranged into algorithms.

The main aim of ACLS is to allow nurses to administer care to adults that are facing cardiac and pulmonary arrests. This course not only equips the nurse with the skills to care for such patients, but it also allows them to diagnose such problems as well as other cardiopulmonary emergencies.

Is ACLS higher than BLS?

The foremost distinction between ACLS and BLS is the level of advancement between the two. Essentially, ACLS is a more advanced and sophisticated course that builds upon the basic fundamentals you develop during BLS – as both of the names suggest. However, there’s much more to it than that.

Do I need to do BLS if I have ACLS?

The official AHA guidance states “Students in ACLS courses are not required by the AHA to have a current BLS Provider card, but they are expected to be proficient in BLS skills. Training Centers may require students to have current BLS Provider card.”
