What is the difference between match points and IMPs in bridge?

Matchpoints– You are compared to many other pairs and are trying to get a high average and above on each board you play. IMPS—International Match Points– You are scoring each result against only one other pair(while playing your team against theirs) on several boards.

What are match points in BBO?

On BBO, your matchpoint score is represented by a percentage of the maximum score you could obtain on a hand. So, on the example hand, you scored 2 1/2 matchpoints out of a possible 4 matchpoints, which is 62.5\% of the available matchpoints.

What do IMPs mean on BBO?

IMPs is the normal method of scoring in team events, or any event where only two tables play each board. When playing IMPs, your score on a contract is compared to the score of the other team who played the same hands.

How are IMPs scored?

IMPs is the method of scoring in a Team of Four match. In general, the higher the difference in points, the more IMPs scored by the winning team, but the scale is not linear. For example, a difference of 30 points converts to 1 IMP, but 150 points is 4 IMP and 750 points is 13 IMP.

What does IMP and MP mean in bridge?

When playing teams bridge a system of scoring is used called International Match Points (IMPs). When playing pairs we generally use Match Points (MPs) scoring but we can also use IMPs. How do you score in bridge?

Points for each trick required and taken are scored as follows: 20 points in clubs and diamonds, 30 points in hearts and spades, 40 points for trick 7 in notrump and 30 points per trick over trick 7. These points are multiplied by two or quadrupled respectively if the contract has been doubled or redoubled.

IMPs are calculated by comparing your score with other tables that played the same board. If you get 1 overtrick, but most other pairs got 2 overtricks, you’ll get negative IMPs.
