What is the difference between RTL design and FPGA design?

FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) is a piece of Hardware (To the end user, this will be part of a board) This consists of huge number of programmable logic blocks,RAMs, DSPs, Flops which can be configured for a specific type of connection.

An FPGA designer works on a platform that someone else has already developed for him/her. They have to understand the underlying FPGA fabric for the chosen device and design their application in such a way that uses that fabric to extract the best value from it. In the design phase they use things like VHDL/Verilog/System C etc.

FPGAs are made from fixed logic cells, so there are limits to the kinds of “gates” that can be implemented. If your RTL implies a 6-input AND gate, it may be implemented by FPGA synthesis as a lookup-table on a MUX, while the standard-cell ASIC can literally put down a 6-input AND gate (if it exists in the library).
