What is the difference between tantalum and electrolytic capacitors?

Electrolytic capacitors made with aluminum (or aluminium) are generally lower priced than those made with tantalum. Tantalum capacitors have higher capacitance per volume. Capacitors made with tantalum can be either polar and non-polar though the polarized form is more common.

Are tantalum capacitors better than electrolytic capacitors?

A tantalum, or tantalum oxide, capacitor is actually a type of electrolytic capacitor. However, tantalum oxide capacitors have a much higher capacitance value for their size. They are more expensive than aluminum oxide, but they are more reliable, more stable and they operate better at certain frequencies.

Why are tantalum capacitors bad?

The downside to using tantalum capacitors is their unfavorable failure mode which may lead to thermal runaway, fires and small explosions, but this can be prevented through the use of external failsafe devices such as current limiters or thermal fuses.

A defective hermetic seal which allows moisture to enter the unit is the most common cause for such failures. Since more of the available tantalum oxide surface is contacted by the moisture than is by the MnO2, the capacitance shows an increase.
