What is the duty of deputy superintendent of police?

The DSP is the subordinate officer to the superintendent of Police; he assists the S.P. and also manages these all work for the police departments, such as preventing crime, managing police stations, controlling investigations, etc.

The DSP has been given an ORP (own rank promotion) as per the new promotion policy approved in July this year. He was promoted to the rank of Sub Inspector in 1991 and Inspector in 1996 before being promoted to the rank of DSP in 2003.

Deputy Superintendents are state police officers who belong to the provincial police forces, either direct entrants at that rank or promoted from inspector. Assistant Commissioner of Police, who are members of the provincial forces can be promoted to the IPS after limited years of service which varies from 8 to 15 years depending on the state.
