What is the importance of angle of attack?

Since we know that stall speed changes with the aircraft’s configuration (e.g., cruise, landing, etc.) and aerodynamic loads, the use of an AOA indicator can help provide a more reliable indication of airflow over the wing, regardless of its configuration. Without it, AOA is essentially “invisible” to pilots.

Does the angle of attack change?

The angle of attack is the angle between the chord line and the relative wind. The coefficient of lift is a measure of how much lift the wing can produce and can only be changed by changing the shape of the wing or the angle of attack at which it cuts through the relative wind.

How does AOA increase lift?

As a wing moves through the air, the wing is inclined to the flight direction at some angle. The nose of the airplane rises, increasing the angle of attack and producing the increased lift needed for takeoff.

What is the principle behind the design of a supercritical airfoil?

Supercritical wings have a flat-on-top “upside down” look. As air moves across the top of a SCW it does not speed up nearly as much as over a curved upper surface. This delays the onset of the shock wave and also reduces aerodynamic drag associated with boundary layer separation.

In both cases (gliding flight or horizontal flight) the point of max L/D will occur at the point of max (lift coefficient / drag coefficient), which will occur NEITHER at the point of max lift coefficient nor at the point of minimum drag coefficient.

Where does Max L/D occur at minimum drag?

If the L/D graph is drawn for gliding flight, the point of max L/D will occur ALMOST at the point of minimum Drag, but not exactly, because in gliding flight Lift is not constant. It is slightly less than Weight, and more so at poor glide ratios than at large glide ratios.

What is the relationship between L/D and drag coefficient?

If the L/D graph is drawn for horizontal powered flight, the point of max L/D will occur exactly at the point of minimum Drag (not the same as minimum drag coefficient), because in horizontal powered flight Lift = Weight, assuming no complications from a tilted thrust line, and Lift is therefore constant.

What happens to an aircraft’s AOA when its velocity increases?

An aircraft could not continue to travel in level flight at a constant altitude and maintain the same AOA if the velocity increases. The lift would increase, and the aircraft would climb due to the increased lift force or speed up.
