What is the NRC issue?

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a register of all Indian citizens whose creation is mandated by the 2003 amendment of the Citizenship Act, 1955. Its purpose is to document all the legal citizens of India so that the illegal immigrants can be identified and deported.

This amendment fundamentally changes the basic concept of Indian state and gives primacy to Hindu identity and excludes Muslims and paves the way for making them second class citizens.

Hajela was a renowned economist who served as the Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University and Sagar University in M.P. He acquired his B. Tech in Electronics from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1992, three years before becoming an IAS officer.
