What would happen if you were exposed to Chernobyl?

Exposure to radioactive iodine (131I) from the Chernobyl accident caused an increased risk of thyroid cancer. I gives off radiation that breaks the chemical bonds in DNA. Mutations can form when the body attempts to repair these bonds. Most of these were in genes previously associated with thyroid cancer.

The latest report from the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effect of Atomic Radiation found 134 first responders who were diagnosed with acute radiation syndrome (ARS) after the Chernobyl accident. Of these, 28 died in the first four months, but not instantaneously. Then 19 more died over the next 20 years.
