When can arp be used?

The Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is a communication protocol used for discovering the link layer address, such as a MAC address, associated with a given internet layer address, typically an IPv4 address. This mapping is a critical function in the Internet protocol suite.

Why we use arp a command?

Using the arp command allows you to display and modify the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) cache. Each time a computer’s TCP/IP stack uses ARP to determine the Media Access Control (MAC) address for an IP address, it records the mapping in the ARP cache so that future ARP lookups go faster.

What is the purpose of ARP and RARP protocol?

Hosts and routers uses ARP for knowing the MAC address of other hosts and routers in the networks. While RARP is used by small users having less facilities.

What does ARP * Command do?

arp command manipulates the System’s ARP cache. It also allows a complete dump of the ARP cache. ARP stands for Address Resolution Protocol. The primary function of this protocol is to resolve the IP address of a system to its mac address, and hence it works between level 2(Data link layer) and level 3(Network layer).

Why is RARP protocol needed?

This protocol is used to communicate data between two points in a server. When a replacement machine is set up, the machine may or might not have an attached disk that may permanently store the IP Address so the RARP client program requests IP Address from the RARP server on the router.

What is the main job of the ARP?

One main role of an ARP cache is to accommodate ARP requests where a gateway has to deal with where to send packets within a local network. For consumers, the gateway is often part of the Internet Service Provider infrastructure.

What is the ARP command used for?

The ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) commands are used to maintain a cache of IP addresses and corresponding Ethernet or Token Ring addresses, which allows the NetBlazer to find the Ethernet or Token Ring address of a host on the same network when given only the destination host s IP address.
