When can you take a calf off its mom?

Though calves naturally wean themselves around ten months, on beef farms calves are weaned when they are around six months old; for dairy farms, this happens just 24 hours after they are born.

How do you take care of a 2 week old calf?

It is a pretty simple process:

  1. Feed a bottle 2–3 times a day.
  2. Watch for scours (more on that in a minute)
  3. Provide pasture, water, forage (after weaning is most typical), good-quality hay and a clean environment.
  4. Provide a free-choice calf-starter such as Calf-Manna® by Manna Pro® (if desired)
  5. Offer a good mineral program.
