When did the Millennium Falcon change?

The ship originally had a more elongated appearance, but this design’s similarity to the Eagle Transporters in Space: 1999 prompted Lucas to change the Falcon’s design. The original model was modified, re-scaled, and used as Princess Leia’s ship, Tantive IV.

Why was the original design for the Millennium Falcon changed at the last minute prior to filming a new hope?

The first designs of the ship looked more like a standard rocket ship with the long tube-shape and with a cockpit in front. However when the ship began to look too much like the Eagle from Space: 1999, the design was modified with a new hammerhead cockpit and became the Tantive IV instead.
