Where does the exhaust fumes go on a submarine?

Submarines have a snorkel mast which they can stick up above the surface of the water to draw in the air for the diesel. The exhaust goes up a parallel duct in same mast but exhausts just below the surface of the water.

How do submarine engines breathe?

The sub must surface (or cruise just below the surface using a snorkel) to run the diesel engines. Once the batteries are fully charged, the sub can head underwater. The batteries power electric motors that drive the propellers.

Do they smoke on submarines?

No one can smoke on US submarines because it’s been prohibited since December of 2010.

How does air circulate in a submarine?

The ventilation system circulates cooled, heated and dehumidified air throughout all compartments of a submarine. Electrostatic precipitators remove dust and smoker and other particles. Main induction fans circulate the air (heated or cooled by the ocean).

How do submarines get rid of carbon dioxide?

CO2 Scrubbing In-order to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, the submariners use a process called ‘CO2 Scrubbing’. This is done chemically using soda lime (sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide) in devices called ‘scrubbers’.

Where do submarines get their oxygen?

electrolysis
Oxygen is supplied either from pressurized tanks, an oxygen generator (which can form oxygen from the electrolysis of water) or some sort of “oxygen canister” that releases oxygen by a very hot chemical reaction.

When did they stop smoking on submarines?

This forced a reversal and Congressional interference to provide important lessons for future efforts to implement smoking bans. In 2010, the Navy successfully implemented a comprehensive smoking ban aboard submarines.

Do any submarines have windows?

No, Navy submarines don’t have windows or portholes so the crew can watch undersea life. Submarines have only periscopes for outside vision, and those are only used close to the surface, a periscope depth (PD).

Where does the exhaust come out of a submarine?

This answer is for the USN’s fleet of nuclear Subs. Under normal conditions the ‘exhaust’ of a submarine is nothing more than heat, and that is radiated into the sea. When a boat is operating on it’s diesel generator, the exhaust is vented to the atmosphere through the snorkel mast.

Why are there no smokers on submarines?

Smoking was prohibited on submarines for health reasons, not just for smokers but for the entire crew who were constantly exposed to their second-hand smoke in the closed atmosphere of the submarine. Being smoke-free also lessened the load on the atmosphere control systems. , FTB1/ss. Five Deterent Patrols SSBN 657 G & 598 B. NOTU, Cape Canaveral.

What is a submarine snorkel?

A submarine snorkel is a device which allows a submarine to operate submerged while still taking in air from above the surface. Modern snorkel induction masts use a fail-safe design using compressed air, controlled by a simple electrical circuit, to hold the “head valve” open against the pull of a powerful spring.

How does a seawater head valve work on a submarine?

Seawater washing over the mast shorts out exposed electrodes on top, breaking the control circuit. This vents the compressed air and allows the head valve to slam shut. When the electrodes are again clear of the water, the circuit is re-energized and the valve reopens. , Navy Veteran, Served 20 years on Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines.
