Which boxing guard is best?

Considered to be the best guard against head damage, the cross-armed guard was used by boxing legend Archie Moore to set up devastating counter punches. He called it “the lock”, a defensive shell that has its origins in bare-knuckle boxing.

What boxers use the Philly Shell?

What is the Philly Shell?

Philly Shell or Shoulder Roll — this is actually a variation of the cross-arm defense. The lead arm (left for an orthodox fighter and right for a southpaw) is placed across the torso usually somewhere in between the belly button and chest and the lead hand rests on the opposite side of the fighter’s torso.

Is the Philly Shell effective?

Its not useless, but the philly shell, in its pure form, is a risky posture to employ in a MT fight. Incorporating elements of it, however, can be effective in the right circumstance. The philly shell is an aggressive boxing stance as opposed to a more defensive full guard that is traditionally used in Muay Thai.

Why is it called Philly Shell?

So why is the term called the Philly shell when the style is as old as boxing itself? One of the reasons it got it’s term is because in Philadelphia, a number of gym warriors, basically successful amateur fighters, did not want to turn pro for various reasons but wanted to continue sparring.

What are the different stances?

As a white belt, you will be regularly practicing five basic stances (dachi)

  • Ready stance (Heiko dachi).
  • Short Fighting Stance (Han Zenkutsu dachi).
  • Long Forward Stance (Zenkutsu dachi).
  • Horse Riding Stance (Kiba dachi).
  • Sumo Stance (Shiko dachi).
