Which brakes are used in ATV?
ATVs use either disc brakes, drum brakes, or a combination of these two systems. When the rider of an ATV with disc brakes activates the hand lever or foot pedal, brake fluid is being squeezed through the brake lines, activating the brake piston.
Why use inboard brakes?
Its main advantages are twofold: a reduction in the unsprung weight of the wheel hubs, as this no longer includes the brake discs and calipers; and braking torque is applied directly to the chassis, rather than being transferred to it through the suspension arms.
What is brake shaft?
1] n. a often pl a device for slowing or stopping a vehicle, wheel, shaft, etc., or for keeping it stationary, esp. by means of friction.
What are in board brake shoes?
The brake shoe is a curved piece of metal with high-friction material (the brake lining) attached to the outside of it. It is attached to the backing plate inside the brake drum with a series of springs and levers, and rests against the hydraulically operated wheel cylinder.
What is inboard and outboard braking?
In inboard brakes, a single caliper is mounted near the output shaft of the gearbox. While in an outboard braking system, the brakes are mounted along the wheel hub of the rear wheels. Most of the teams go for in board braking as they are less in weight and are well enough to stop the atv.
What is differential braking?
Differential braking is the unequal application of braking applied to different wheels. In the automotive world differential braking would be used during the activation of any anti-lock/anti-skid systems on the vehicle.
Why have a drive shaft brake?
A driveline brake (also known as a transmission brake) is designed to stop the driveline by stopping the rotation of the driveshaft. On most 4x4s, the driveline brake is mounted at the rear output of the transfer case, but there are pinion mounted driveline brake options available as well.
How do you go down a hill on an ATV?
To descend a hill, drivers should always look ahead, keep their weight uphill, use a lower gear, keep the speed slow and gradually brake. They should make sure their path is clear of as many obstacles as possible. Going across a hill rather than straight up or down can be equally dangerous.
