Which dialect is closest to standard German?

Standard German is colloquially called “High German”, but linguistically, this isn’t really correct.

  • Standard German is roughly equivalent to the Hannover dialect.
  • High German is spoken in Austria, Switzerland and southern and central Germany.
  • Low German is spoken in Northern Germany.
