Which is more covalent NaCl or AlF3?

Answer: Bonding is thought of more as a transition from pure covalent to pure ionic. Pure covalent is PH3 and pure ionic is CsF. Compare this to a well know ionic compound (NaCl = difference of 2.23) Based purely on electronegativity AlF3 is more ionic in character than NaCl.

Which is more covalent based on fajans rule?

According to Fajans’ rules, smaller the cation, more is the covalency. Therefore, LiCl is the most covalent.

Which one is more covalent AlF3 or AlCl3?

According to Fajan’s rule, with increasing size of the anion and with decreasing size of the cation, ionic character of the compound decreases while the covalent character increases. Size of chlorine being greater than fluorine, AlCl3 is covalent while AlF3 is ionic.

Why is ali3 more covalent?

The Al3+ cation has a 3+ charge which allows it to distort the Cl- ion more. This means more electrons are drawn away from the Cl-ion. This means now that there is more sharing of the electrons giving AlCl3 more covalent character.

Which of the following compound has highest covalent character LiCl?

LiCl will have most covalent character in accordance to Fajan’s rule, according to which, smaller cation has most Polarising power and bigger anions have great polarisibility which induces covalent character to the ionic compounds.

Is AlF3 a covalent compound?

AlCl3 is covalent while AlF3 is ionic. There is this rule called as Fajan’s rule which states that with increasing size of the anion and with decreasing size of the cation ionic character of the compound decreases while the covalent character increases.

Is ali3 ionic or covalent?

Al3+ is highly charged in nature and it can polarise the electron clouds of Cl to a large extent. So, electrons get shared between the two ions. Hence the compound is a covalent one, but the bond is polar covalent.

Why is AlF3 covalent?

Size of chlorine being greater than fluorine, AlCl3 is covalent while AlF3 is ionic. It is due to the Fajan’s rule. Fajan’s Rule: Compound with low positive charge, large cation and small anion has ionic bond where as a compound with high positive charge, small cation and large anion are covalently bonded.

What is the difference between AlF3 and NaCl3?

This means that NaCl is predominantly ionic. The AlF3 molecule has a Al3+ ion and a small F- ion. The Al3+ will find it more difficult to distort the F-ion because of its relatively smaller size and its low charge of 1. AlCl3 has more covalent character than AlF with NaCl having the most ionic character.

How did Kazimierz Fajans predict ionic bonds?

A few ionic bonds have partial covalent characteristics which were first discussed by Kazimierz Fajans in 1923. At that time with the help of X-ray crystallography, he was able to predict ionic or covalent bonding with the attributes like ionic and atomic radius. What is Fajans’ rule?

Why is AlCl3 more covalent than Na+ and Na+?

The Al3+ cation has a 3+ charge which allows it to distort the Cl- ion more. This means more electrons are drawn away from the Cl-ion. This means now that there is more sharing of the electrons giving AlCl3 more covalent character. The small Na+ Ion and the Cl- ion is not as distorted as much as the Cl- ion in AlCl3.

What are the postulates of the Fajans rule?

Postulates of Fajans’ Rule The rule can be stated on the basis of 3 factors, which are: Size of the ion: Smaller the size of cation, the larger the size of the anion, greater is the covalent character of the ionic bond. The charge of Cation: Greater the charge of cation, greater is the covalent character of the ionic bond.
