Which language is most similar to Serbian?

The closest languages are Croatian, Macedonian, Bulgarian and Slovenian. Russian is kind of close but not so much. There are some main differences in accent (Serbians speak with a hard accent and we generally speak very fast), grammar etc.

Is Serbian similar to Bulgarian?

They both belong to South Slavic languages, but in reality have some differences; Serbian has noun declension – Bulgarian doesn’t. Serbian has tonal stress in words – Bulgarian doesn’t. Bulgarian has definite article – Serbian doesn’t.

Bulgarian is very very very similar to Serbian and is almost identical to Macedonian. Whoever doesn’t recognise that has not done his research right. Same language has been used for centuries in Serbia,Bosnia,Croatia,Montenegro with different dialect (e.g. English in USA, UK , etc. )

Maybe the most close language is Croatian, Montenegrin and Bosnian but all other language like Slovenian, Macedonian or other Slavic languages are so different that Serbian people can’t understand. However, there are some similar words but concept of the sentence are different and it is very hard to understand if you don’t know the language.

The modern Bulgarian language, in spite of some non-Slavic traits, is still pure Slavic language because if one looks closer into these non-Slavic traits, he will see that they arise from a common Slavic basis. Thus, modern Bulgarian is rooted in that common Proto-Slavic language which is thought of as the source of all Slavic languages.
