Islam and Cremation Of all world religions, Islam is probably the most strongly opposed to cremation. Unlike Judaism and Christianity, there is little diversity of opinion about it.

While the practice of cremation is becoming more widespread in the United States, many religions and cultures have strict opinions on cremation—while some religions forbid cremation, others mandate it, while others are flexible.

In 1963, at the Second Vatican Council Pope Paul VI lifted the ban on cremation, and in 1966 allowed Catholic priests to officiate at cremation ceremonies. This is done on the condition that the ashes must be buried or interred, not scattered.

Why was cremation banned?

In 1997, the funeral rite was modified so that church funerals can take place when the body has already been cremated before the ashes are brought to the church. Since the lifting of the ban, even with the official preference for burial, the Church has become more and more open to the idea of cremation.

Hindus believe that burning the body, and, hence, destroying it, helps the departed soul get over any residual attachment it may have developed for the deceased person. In fact, all the Dharmic faiths —Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism — believe in some variation of this fundamental principle.

As All Souls’ Day comes near, a Catholic bishop has reminded the faithful that ashes of cremated loved ones cannot be kept at home. In 2016, the Vatican affirmed that Catholics may be cremated but should not have their ashes scattered or kept in urns at home.

The Bible neither favors nor forbids the process of cremation. Nevertheless, many Christians believe that their bodies would be ineligible for resurrection if they are cremated. This argument, though, is refuted by others on the basis of the fact that the body still decomposes over time after burial.
