Who Solved the abc conjecture?

Shinichi Mochizuki
After an eight-year struggle, embattled Japanese mathematician Shinichi Mochizuki has finally received some validation. His 600-page proof of the abc conjecture, one of the biggest open problems in number theory, has been accepted for publication.

Has the abc conjecture been solved?

The abc conjecture was shown to be equivalent to the modified Szpiro’s conjecture. Various attempts to prove the abc conjecture have been made, but none are currently accepted by the mainstream mathematical community and as of 2020, the conjecture is still regarded as unproven.

How do you find a conjecture?

How do you test conjectures?

TESTING CONJECTURES. The first question that we face in evaluating a conjecture is gauging whether it is true or not. While confirming examples may help to provide insight into why a conjecture is true, we must also actively search for counterexamples.

Do Mochizuki’s papers prove the abc conjecture?

Posted online in 2012, Mochizuki’s papers supposedly prove the abc conjecture, one of the most far-reaching problems in number theory. Despite multiple conferences dedicated to explicating Mochizuki’s proof, number theorists have struggled to come to grips with its underlying ideas.

What ever happened to Mochizuki?

Mochizuki, who has denied requests for interviews over the years, did not appear at the press conference, and did not make himself available to reporters. Eight years ago, Mochizuki posted four massive papers online, claiming to have solved the abc conjecture.

Is Shinichi Mochizuki’s proof flawed?

Shinichi Mochizuki maintains that his proof is not flawed despite the assertions of Jakob Stix and Peter Scholze that they’ve discovered a “serious, unfixable gap.”

What happened to Mochizuki’s proof of quantum mechanics?

Then, in 2018, two highly respected mathematicians said they were confident that they had found a flaw in Mochizuki’s proof — something many saw as a death blow to his claims. The latest announcement seems unlikely to move many researchers over to Mochizuki’s camp.
