Why are airline passengers called pax?

It’s first published use was in the 1970’s as a derivative of the word “passenger” on planes or trains ( depending what context you read it in ). Like many things, a shortened form but not necessarily an abbreviation. As an example – a “tarp” is short for “tarpaulin”. It is an airline abbreviation for passengers.
