Why are American cities so spread out?
Modern American cities are the result of inner downtown areas that wend upwards, and sprawling suburbs that went outwards because they were often built up in the heyday of trains, streetcars, trams and motor vehicles.
Why are cities so small in America?
The reason is that America has much fewer villages and small places than Europe. Historically, the population of European immigrants settled in the cities than in the countryside, and when people moved within the US, it was to go to a metropolitan area, not to the country, which made the trend even more pronounced.
Why American cities look the same?
It was simply easier to copy what neighboring places did. And so, standard codes were transcribed from one municipality to the next. This is the origin of our places beginning to look the same, at least from an urban design perspective.
