Why are CANDU reactors safer?

CANDU reactors are designed more effectively for safe operation than RBMKs such as the Chernobyl station. CANDU’s advantages include better contain- ment and two emergency shutdown systems, which operate independently and shut down the reactor much faster.

Why are the BWR control rods inserted from the bottom of the core?

Differently from the PWR, in a BWR the control rods (boron carbide plates) are inserted from below to give a more homogeneous distribution of the power: in the upper side the density of the water is lower due to vapour formation, making the neutron moderation less efficient and the fission probability lower.

How do CANDU reactors work?

CANDU reactors produce electricity through a process known as fission. Fission is the process of splitting atoms of natural uranium inside the reactor, releasing radiation and heat. The heat – energy – is harnessed to make steam to power the turbines and generators, which in turn produce electricity.

Why was the CANDU reactor controversial?

Federal officials hailed the sale as a major step in building Canada’s presence in China. But at home, the sale provoked an explosion of protests. To critics, it presented the deplorable spectacle of Canada selling sensitive technology to a country known for its human-rights violations and poor environmental record.

How is a CANDU reactor different from a light water reactor?

CANDU reactors use about 25 to 30\% less mined uranium than a comparable light water reactor (mostly because of the better use of neutrons in the reactor). In CANDU reactors, fuel in the form of uranium oxide powder is packed into pellets and placed in the fuel rods.

What is a calandria in a nuclear reactor?

Reactor Assembly The CANDU 6 reactor assembly, shown in the figure opposite, includes the fuel channels contained in and supported by a horizontal cylindrical tank known as the calandria. The calandria is closed and supported by end shields at each end.
