Why are Latvians Russian?

The majority of the Russian national group in Latvia today are a result of a big migration movement from other republics of the USSR, mainly from the Russian Federation. Russians settled mostly in towns rather than in the country. They tended to choose larger cities such as Riga and Daugavpils.

What did Latvians used to be called?

German rule During the time of the Crusades, German—or, more precisely, Saxon—overseas expansion reached the eastern shores of the Baltic. Because the people occupying the coast of Latvia were the Livs, the German invaders called the country Livland, a name rendered in Latin as Livonia.

Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania had been part of the Russian Empire since the end of the 18th century, but after the Russian Revolution of 1917 they became independent states.

Can Latvians understand Russian?

Latvians who have never learned Russian cannot understand it, of course. The languages are virtually unrelated. However, many Latvians have either learned Russian or lived next to Russians, because of the large Russian population in Baltics and, therefore, many if not most, tend to have a good command of Russian.

Not identical but very close. They are in the same Baltic Slavic language group. Ethnical Latvians don’t like to admit the fact but the only other language closer to Latvian than Russian is Lithuanian. Similar grammar (not identical but very similar), roughly one third of Latvian words are related to Russian.

Is Latvian a Slav?

So in short, Latvians as an ethnic group are NOT Slavic, despite some historic influences on our language and culture and the mixed ancestry of some Latvians, however Latvia as a country is only somewhat Slavic at most, and only due to its big Russian-speaking minority (Russian is not an official language, though).
