Located in what was the fastest growing California county in 2013, San Jose and its metro area were a job hub for many workers. But rising costs of housing and living, coupled with the tumultuous economy during the pandemic, drove the area’s population to decline.

Among those who were likely to leave, 84 percent cited the cost of living as a major reason, 77 percent specifically cited high housing costs and 62 percent cited the quality of life. Forty-eight percent of respondents said the region was headed in the right direction, while 52 percent said it was on the wrong track.

According to the real estate website Zillow, the median home value in San Francisco is $1,334,800; $1,080,300 in San Jose; and $757,700 in Oakland.

And yes, every place you could live has trade-offs. Yet, current inhabitants are starting to leave San Francisco at significant rates. The increasing costs and diminishing value of San Francisco are causing many folks to question the merits of living in the city, or in the Bay Area altogether.
