Why are people opposing NRC and CAA?

The states of Rajasthan, West Bengal, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh – all ruled by political parties that oppose the BJP – have announced that they will not implement either the National Register of Citizens (NRC) or the Citizenship Amendment Act.

This could then well be used politically to highlight the number of ‘illegal Muslim immigrants’ living in India.

What is the difference between Assam and the nationwide NRC exercise?

Unlike in Assam where NRC was conducted under the supervision of the Supreme Court, a nationwide exercise will supposedly be under the Union home ministry. In Assam, over 1.9 million applicants failed to make it to the NRC list, including many Hindus, which has necessitated the promise of a recount.
