Why beryllium oxide is insoluble but beryllium sulphate is soluble in water?

BeSO4 is soluble in water because it has high hydration energy as the size of Be2+ ion is small. Its lattice enthalpy is smaller than its hydration energy which makes it soluble in water. But in case of BeO, Be2+ is a small cation with high polarising power. Also, O2- is a small anion.

Is beryllium sulphate insoluble in water?

Beryllium sulfate

Identifiers
Solubility in water 36.2 g/100 mL (0 °C) 40.0 g/100 mL (20 °C) 54.3 g/100 mL (60 °C)
Solubility insoluble in alcohol
Refractive index (nD) 1.4374 (tetrahydrate)
Thermochemistry

Why is barium sulfate insoluble in water?

Barium sulphate is insoluble in water because it has a high lattice energy. On adding water in barium sulphate its hydration energy decreases more rapidly in comparison to its lattice energy. And to be soluble in water the component lattice energy should be less than its hydration energy.

Why is beryllium sulphate soluble in water?

Also, due to small size, beryllium has high charge density and thus higher hydration. So it will be freely soluble in water. This is because the sizes of barium ion and sulphate ion are almost similar and thus the compound has a very high lattice energy which is significantly greater than its hydration energy.

Is beryllium oxide soluble in water?

Beryllium oxide

Names
Melting point 2,507 °C (4,545 °F; 2,780 K)
Boiling point 3,900 °C (7,050 °F; 4,170 K)
Solubility in water 0.00002 g/100 mL
Band gap 10.6 eV

Does beryllium oxide dissolve in water?

Why is beryllium fluoride soluble in water?

Fluorides of alkaline earth metals except BeF2 are insoluble in water. The solubility of BeF2 in water is due to the higher hydration energy on account of the smaller size of Be2+ ion and F− ion and the high charge density of Be2+ ion. Q3. If the lattice enthalpy has a larger value, the compound is less soluble.

Why sodium sulphate is soluble in water but barium sulphate is insoluble?

Sodium is alkali metal, while Barium is alkaline earth metal, so Sodium Sulphate has higher hydration energy than Lattice energy. And Barium sulphate has higher Lattice energy than Hydration energy. Thus, sodium sulphate is soluble in water while Barium sulphate is sparingly soluble in water.

Which barium salts are insoluble in water?

Barium sulfate (BaSO4 B a S O 4 ), is quite insoluble in water. Its solubility is only about 0.0002g at 20∘C making…

Does beryllium oxide react with water?

The alkali metal oxides all react vigorously with water to give the hydroxides. Beryllium oxide is essentially unreactive toward water.

Why is beryllium oxide covalent?

Burning beryllium metal in dry air produces beryllium oxide, BeO. This is a salt with and ions in a crystal lattice, although the attractions between and have an appreciable covalent character. Since each Be atom can give up two electrons, and each oxygen atom needs two electrons, the atoms combine in a 1:1 ratio.

(1) Beryllium is also present in a variety of compounds such as beryllium fluoride, beryllium chloride, beryllium sulfate, beryllium oxide, and beryllium phosphate. (1) Pure beryllium is insoluble in water; however, some of its compounds are soluble in water.

Why does beryllium sulphate precipitate dissolve in water?

The lattice energy of beryllium oxide is very high, and the hydration energy is comparatively low. For beryllium sulphate, the hydration energy is enough to overcome the lattice energy and it dissolves. The hydrogen ions that were originally removed are simply replaced. The precipitate dissolves as the original hydrated beryllium ion is re-formed.

What is pure beryllium?

(1) Pure beryllium is a hard gray metal that does not occur naturally but does occur as a chemical component of certain kinds of rocks, coal and oil, soil, and volcanic dust. (1) Beryllium is also present in a variety of compounds such as beryllium fluoride, beryllium chloride, beryllium sulfate, beryllium oxide, and beryllium phosphate.

What are the sources of exposure to beryllium?

Tobacco smoke is another potential source of exposure to beryllium in the general population. Beryllium levels of 0.47, 0.68, and 0.74 µg/cigarette were found in three brands of cigarettes. Between 1.6 and 10\% of the beryllium content, or 0.011–0.074 µg/cigarette, was reported to pass into the smoke during smoking.
