Why deuterium is less electronegative than Protium?

Hi, Here is the answer to your question: For Protium(1H1) it has one proton(+ve charged) & so it could attract the electrons effectively towards itself but in deuterium there is an added neutral charge in the form of a neutron which increases the size thus reduces the electronegativity tendency of the deuterium atom.

Is deuterium an electron donating group?

The net effect is that, the shortest bond with carbon of deuterium increased the electron density at carbon, result as the deuterium is inductively more electron donating than protium.

Which has more +I effect Cd3 or Ch3?

(since C-D bond has more electron density). CARBANION STABILITY =>negatively charged species i.e. electron present in excess. Hence any electron withdrawing grp(EWG) will stabilise it. SO, Ch3- is more stable than Cd3-…

Why deuterium has more +I effect than hydrogen?

Well, Deuterium has small radius than Hydrogen. ( For proving that, refer Bohr theory and in that , you have to use unified mass of nucleus of hydrogen.) Thus, as the radius of Deuterium is less than that of hydrogen, the C-D bond length will surely be less than C-H bond. Inductive effect is distance dependent.

Why do alkyl groups have a positive inductive effect?

The alkyl group doesn’t literally “push” the electrons away – the other end of the bond attracts them more strongly. This means that the alkyl group becomes slightly positive ( +) and the carbon they are attached to becomes slightly negative ( -). The alkyl group has a positive inductive effect.

How does protium differ from deuterium and tritium?

The main difference between protium, deuterium, and tritium is that protium has no neutrons in its nuclei, whereas deuterium is composed of one neutron and tritium is composed of two neutrons [17]. Protium is an isotope of hydrogen that is composed of one proton and one electron.

Which has more inductive effect hydrogen or deuterium?

Thus, as the radius of Deuterium is less than that of hydrogen, the C-D bond length will surely be less than C-H bond. Inductive effect is distance dependent. Considering above aspect, Deuterium has a strong inductive effect than Hydrogen.

Which is more stable CH3+ or CD3+?

CARBOCATION STABILITY=>postive charge species i.e. electron deficient. Hence any electron donating grp(EDG) will stabilize it . SO, Cd3+ is more stable than Ch3+… (since C-D bond has more electron density).

Which is more stable CH3 3C+ or CD3 3C+ and why?

Explanation: since hyperconjugation effect of CH3 is more than CD3.

Why does CH3 show inductive?

CH3 is an electron donating group. It donates electron rather than accepting it because in general the atoms that forms bond with carbon of CH3 are more electronegative than carbon itself. In case of NH3,due to electronegativity of N it withdraws electron and decreases electron density thus showing -I effect. Regards.

What is the difference between protium and deuterium?

Protium: Protium is an isotope of Hydrogen that is composed of one proton and one electron. Deuterium: Deuterium is an isotope of Hydrogen that is composed of one proton, one neutron, and one electron.

Why deuterium has a stronger inductive effect than hydrogen?

Thus, as the radius of Deuterium is less than that of hydrogen, the C-D bond length will surely be less than C-H bond. Inductive effect is distance dependent. Considering above aspect, Deuterium has a strong inductive effect than Hydrogen.

What is the effect of deuterium’s bond length on electron density?

The net effect is that the shorter bond with deuterium increases the electron density at carbon, e.g. deuterium is inductively more electron donating than protium towards carbon. Similar arguments can be applied to tritium and it’s even shorter C−T bond should be even more inductively electron donating towards carbon than deuterium.

What is the mass number of deuterium in H?

Deuterium: The symbol for Deuterium is 1 H. Tritium: The symbol for Tritium is 1 H. Protium: The mass number of Protium is 1. Deuterium: The mass number of Deuterium is 2. Tritium: The mass number of Tritium is 3. Protium: The atomic mass of Protium is 1.00794 amu.
