Why did BIC stop making adjustable lighters?

At the time, Bic lighters sold in America were made in France, Greece, Spain and Mexico. It appears that quality control on the flame adjustment varied across each sector of manufacture. Safety concerns led to the adoption of a redesign to eliminate the adjustable flame.
