Why did Igor karkaroff betray Voldemort?

After Voldemort’s first downfall, Karkaroff was caught by Aurors and briefly imprisoned in Azkaban. He betrayed many Death Eaters in order to avoid remaining in Azkaban.

Why is Dumbledore friends with Karkaroff?

In the book, Dumbledore is always polite to Karkaroff and treats him like a valued guest, despite him being a former Death Eater who clearly didn’t regret his crimes, and Karkaroff treats him with respect, though he’s occasionally rude and impolite.
