Why did it take so long for Attack on Titan Season 2?

Despite its popularity, it took four years for the second season of the anime to premiere, as there wasn’t enough source material. The manga suffered from ongoing production issues, and chapters were often delayed. Fortunately for fans, the gap between Attack on Titan Season 2 and 3 was much shorter.

Why did Season 2 of AoT take 4 years?

It technically didn’t need 4 years to be released. The reason why the delay existed was to make sure, that the manga is far enough ahead so that they don’t require any filler at all and might even be able to improve small things of the manga.

Why was AoT Season 2 so short?

The studio that is adapting it. AoT is made by Wit Studio, which is very small (34 employees according to Wikipedia). They only release one anime per year on average, so the production time is longer. It also means they might need to outsource some of the animation, which can add time to the schedule as well.
