Why did Luke not kill Vader?

Vader more or less wanted to incapacitate Luke rather than kill him, as is seen in both Empire and Jedi. For Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine do not want the son of Skywalker dead; if he could be turned. Initially Luke resists, but ignites his lightsaber and strikes.

Was Luke afraid of Vader?
