Once historians started wanting to record events in more absolute terms, and the rather approximate (and probably wrong) Year of the birth of Jesus Christ had been assigned to the beginning of the AD period, sometimes now referred to as CE, for Current Era, then they could start assigning BC dates to earlier events.
