Why do cycling shorts have padding?

The main purposes of padded shorts is to protect and cushion the bottom and genitals from the pressure of the body on the saddle, and to cushion the sit bones. The pad – also known as the chamois – is designed to sit against the crotch and form a cushioning barrier between your body and the bike saddle.

Do Olympic cyclists wear padding?

On a road bike; nope. On a bumpy surface you “post” or lift your ass out of the saddle and absorb the road shock with your leg muscles and arms and shoulders. With everything adjusted just right and wearing the proper riding kit including the essential padded shorts or tights it is not at all uncomfortable.

What Can You Do To Avoid Problems In The Crotch.

  2. Try a saddle with a cutout. A cutout redistributes pressure in the crotch and may relieve pain.
  3. Get the right shorts.

Should I put the padding in the shorts?

Putting the padding in the shorts means that the padding will always be exactly where you need it. Most people tend to change their position on the bike a bit, specially when riding longer tours. It’s not really “padding”, although it does offer a cushion. It’s a chamois, which part of its purpose is to absorb moisture and wick it away from your skin which helps reduce friction. This is aided by creams that condition the chamois. and +1 to @Matt Adams answer. It’s never a good idea to rely on the saddle for padding. The reason is simple.

Is there a saddle that doesn’t gasket in the groin?

If the saddle is the right shape for your groin, there should be no “gasket” introduced to the groin. My personal preference is a leather saddle (I use the B17 Brooks) that “gives”, breathes, wicks away moisture and stays cool. I use a chamois-less Lycra short that ventilates immediately.
