Why do modern tanks have shot traps?

Shot traps formed when a bounced shell could go through the top or bottom armor. The battle between armor vs weapons started with Cain an Able and has continued throughout all time. As the weapons improve, the armor changes, back and forth.

What is a shot trap on a tank?

A shot trap is a deficiency in an armoured vehicle’s design. It is a location where a shell that has struck but fails to penetrate may ricochet in such a manner as to hit another area of the vehicle where it is more likely to cause damage.

Why do modern tanks look like they have shot traps on them?

As a result, the shells behave completely differently upon impact – where a WW2 era shell might ricochet, a modern APFSDS penetrator will be absorbed by (i.e. get stuck in) the armor or shatter. That’s why some modern tanks look like they might have shot traps on them: against modern shells, it just doesn’t matter.

What are tank traps used for?

Tank traps are also used to control motor vehicle access to vulnerable areas like protected parks, beaches, and forests. Some historic examples of these traps can be seen in some parts of Europe, left over from the Second World War, and modern traps can sometimes be seen near parks and reserves.

Is a 40mm shot trap a mobility kill?

Yes. If 40mm rounds are rebounded into the drivers periscopes, then the driver can no longer see, thus can no longer drive (or put his head out), thus it is a mobility kill. If this was from a direct result of shot traps, then obviously the tank would have been better off without a shot trap.
