Why do NFL teams get a bye week?

Players take advantage of the down time between games so they can get as much rest as they can. When the bi-week comes around coaches cut down practice time and give players two days off during the week so players have time to heal their wounds and rest their bodies.

In 1990, the NFL re-introduced a bye week to the schedule, which it had not had since 1966. Each team played sixteen regular season games over seventeen weeks. During the season, on a rotating basis, each team would have the weekend off.
