Why do some cars sound like guns?

On a carbureted car the fuel jets will sometimes get clogged, casing a lean fuel mixture and this will cause a backfire (gun shot sounds from a tailpipe).

Why does my car sound like a tractor when I accelerate?

When your smooth-running car or truck suddenly sounds like an angry tractor, chances are good that something within the exhaust system is to blame. The problem could be a broken exhaust manifold, or it could be farther downstream in the exhaust system’s pipes and its connection to the muffler.

When combustion doesn’t happen in a timely manner, the exhaust valve opens while the air-fuel mixture is still igniting, causing this explosion to “spill” out of the cylinder, making a loud popping noise.

Why do turbo cars pop?

Generally speaking, turbocharged cars can also create these sounds. The popping noises occur when ignition is retarded and unburnt fuel is sent into the exhaust system, where it combusts.
