Why do you ask grammar?

It is a statement, meaning roughly: You are asking why. In my view the correct punctuation would be either Why, you ask. or “Why?”, you ask. It is a rhetorical phrasing and it means roughly You might well wonder why, or similarly, Why, you might (well) wonder.
